Authentic vs Photocopy
Labels and Wrappers for Antique and Obsolete Ammunition
During the past years a number of dealers have been selling labels for cartridges made on photocopiers. If you did not already know, the photocopier was not invented until 1940.

Almost all material printed during the Civil War was done by letterpress printing. Letterpress printing is the process of pressing type directly onto paper. The type was handset by placing individual lead letters in a composing stick to spell out the words. The type or form, as it was called, was then locked into an iron frame chase and then pressed onto paper using one of several types of printing presses available at the time. This printing method made direct impressions on the paper, and in some cases, embossed the the letters into the paper, which could actually be felt on the front or back side.

My labels and wrappers are made the exact way they were made during the Civil War. The type is handset from my collection of over five hundred fonts(sizes and styles). It is then locked in a chase (iron frame) and printed using a hundred-year-old letterpress.

Generally speaking, ammo packages were either made with wrappers containing load information, or were wrapped in paper and a separate label was applied. It was more common for Union ammo to be issued in printed wrappers, while Confederate ammo was generally issued in paper packages with an applied label.

The printed labels listed for sale here are small labels that get glued onto the wrapped package or box of ammo. The printed wrappers are printed on a large sheet of paper. My wrappers are made in the same size as specified in the original ordinance manual.

Many hours have gone into researching these labels and matching the type styles. They are of museum quality and will please even the most serious reenactor for use or display in Historic and Living History Exhibits.
